New Summer Template!

It's hot and muggy here again today! Great pool weather! Today I am sharing another summer template ... although you can interpret it any way you like. I made it into a 40th birthday page for my husband. I originally made this for the summer but it really fit the "40" theme!

What Products Represent Your Scrapbook Style?

Today I am issuing a blog "challenge" to those who are interested! If you want to play along do a blog post about what products represent your style and why? You can read my answers below to see which ones I chose. If you come back and link your blog post, I will add it to this page :) I hope to see you play along, it's fun to see people's answers. To use the image type I used (which is way easier than uploading images), go to the full product description for the product at scrapbook.com. Underneath the photo of it is the share button. Click on that and a box will pop up. The Html code will be clicked. Copy and the link and come back your blog. You will need to enter this on your Html. Go to "edit Html." Paste that link and you are done!!

When I say what products represent your style what do you think of? Check out my gallery to see. For me it's about four main categories. The first thing I think of is linear and repeat patterns. For instance I rarely ink and usually have clean lines. I also use a lot of repeat patterns, like photos in a row, buttons in a row, etc. Here are products that gravitate towards.

The next thing I usually gravitate towards are shapes! I love big shapes, small shapes, any shapes :)




Sometimes on my scrapbook pages, I like to change it up and use some eclectic papers and designs! I usually try to pair that up with my linear style. Here are some examples.

Kit Clubs

Some of you may have heard or read about various "kit clubs". For those of you who don't know what that is, today's post will give you some information on kit clubs.

...so what is a "kit club"? Well, it's a monthly subscription to a kit filled with coordinating cardstock, patterned papers, and embellishments. The kit club matches products up for you, so you don't have to go searching for all the pieces that go together. Also, they deliver it right to your door, so you get a package of scrapbooking products on a monthly basis.

Each kit club varies in price and products, so shopping to see which one suits your style is probably best. Also, some kits will allow you to purchase a subscription of each kit, which will lower the monthly cost of each kit. As for shipping charges, these will also vary according to every kit club.

Freebie Heaven!

I thought it would be fun to post about where to get great freebies for paper and digital scrapbooking on the web. There are many designers and bloggers who make freebies!

Creating Cards by Heather!

Today I thought I'd talk about card making. Are you intimidated by cards, not sure where to begin or can't get the design to click? I used to hate making cards. I pretty much threw out any card I tried to make. But I wanted to create beautiful cards for friends and family so I decided to study some cardmakers that I admired to see if I could find the secret to great cardmaking. Now I love to make cards, mostly simple style but I love to have a stockpile to select from for special occasions.

Here are a few things that I discovered: anyone can do it - it just takes a little care and time.

1. It takes me as much time to design and create a card as it does a page. Pages are basically mini layouts. They turn out better if you think about the design elements, papers and embellies - use your best.

2. It's all in the details. Adding techniques like embossing, doodling, stitches, bows, bling really adds to the card. Clustering and layering make for great cards too. Don't forget your punches or stamps either. Pop dots make a card "pop!"

Here's a few examples:

for this card I embossed some cardstock and inked it, stitched around the edge and added a button,rounded the corner



in this card I just punched an edge, added a rubon, handcut butterfly from patterned paper and bling



this one is just embossed CS and rub-ons and a doodle down the edge



some corrugated CS, paper scraps and leftover stencil from some chipboard, some tulle



a bit more detailed with shaped card, chipboard frame, sentiment printed and added, flowers, tags



3. Using different shapes really helps a card stand out. They're really not much more difficult than regular cards. There's lot of free templates available (Pam has tons of beautiful ones right here)

Here's a card I made from the recent flower template. I dampened the edged and curled them up and also curled the paper in the center of the flower. I added a rubon sentiment and a 3-D butterfly





4. Get inspiration from other card makers. There are lots of sketch blogs and I love to check out the many versions of cards created from one sketch.

5. Scraplift a favorite card.

6. Use a card kit to start out - pieces are precut and all you need to do is put them together. Usually they include items that you wouldn't necessarily buy yourself. I actually have 5 unique card sets available right now on my blog and a giveaway.

7. Browse the web for fun sentiments- I love to do dog cards with "have a GRRReat birthday" or "just be-paws"

8. Don't be put off by other amazing cards. There are cards that I totally admire but they're just not my style so I stick to what suits me. Have fun and try out different styles.

Autism Awareness Blog Hop + RAK!!!


It's a blog hop!! This hop is a bit different than most you may have followed. Today at each of the blogs in our hop we are going to share some information about Autism. All of us at Ideas For Scrapbookers are concerned with special needs of all kinds. Several of our families are directly affected by physical, medical, developmental or cognitive challenges. Both Cathy and I have children that are on the Autism Spectrum. With April being Autism Awareness Month, we thought it would be the perfect time to share some information as well as some scrapbooking and crafting with you.

So let's start it off by helping you understand what autism is.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. People with ASDs handle information in their brain differently than other people. ASDs are “spectrum disorders.” That means ASDs affect each person in different ways, and can range from very mild to severe. People with ASDs share some similar symptoms, such as problems with social interaction. But there are differences in when the symptoms start, how severe they are, and the exact nature of the symptoms.

A Few Autism Facts
  • Autism now affects 1 in 110 children and 1 in 70 boys
  • Autism prevalence figures are growing
  • More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined
  • Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
  • There is no medical detection or cure for autism
  • Autism is 4-5 times more prevalent in males than in females
  • Autism is a life-long disorder

Today I am sharing a page I made about my son who was diagnosed with Autism at the age of two and a half. This is a follow up to the page titled: A Year of Progress. First I am sharing the text for my page.

Sean, over the years, you have made so much progress. You were diagnosed with Autism at the age of two and a half. At that time you were barely talking or giving eye contact. The doctor seemed hopeful and encouraged us to be the same way! Over the years, you started talking so much that we knew that you would be just fine in that area. You began to read around the age of three and your speech came along with that. Your communication skills grew and grew and by the time you entered first grade, you will were able to play along side with your peers. We have had you in speech therapy since you were around three and you always did so well with that. You all are learning more and more how to use your social skills when appropriate! Daddy and I are so proud of your and know that your future is bright!

Sketch Away!

Sketches are a scrapbooker’s tool to creating a layout when you don’t know where to start. Don’t know where to start? Well, I’d say start with picking a sketch that inspires you. Is it a sketch with one picture, two pictures, five pictues, etc.? Is it a single page or a double paged layout?
Remember that they are there for you inspire you to create. You can follow it to the tee, or you can change it up to fit your own personal style.
I felt inspired by this sketch over at Sketchy Thursdays:


…so I created this layout:



My layout holds similar characteristics to the original design, yet it’s very different. Instead of using one picture, I decided to use four. The sketch did not show circles across the middle of the page, but I decided to add my own flair with brads.
As you can see, the possibilities of projects are endless when using a sketch.

Journaling 101

Different ways to journal:
  1. Make a list. (A top 10 list, a list of likes or dislikes, there are so many possibilities!)
  2. Answer the questions who, what, when, where, and why?
  3. Use lyrics from a song.
  4. Find quotes that work with your theme.
  5. Pretend you’re talking to the person in the photo. Give them some advice.
  6. Tell a favorite story about the person in the photo.
  7. Pretend you are telling a friend why you are making the layout. If you’re making it to remember an event, imagine you’re telling your friend what happened, and write it down.
  8. Use a poem instead of journaling.
  9. Pretend you’re writing a newspaper article, invent your own byline, and paper. Don’t forget the location and the date.
  10. Interview someone. Ask your kids what they think about their Dad for a layout with a photo of them together. Ask your grandmother what it was like growing up. The possibilities are endless.
  11. When all else fails have someone else write the journaling. Give the photo to your husband or one of your children, and ask them to write about it.

Different ways to incorporate journaling on your layouts:

  1. Write it on a tag and tuck it behind your photo.
  2. Use a hinge to attach a photo and attach your journaling underneath it where you can read it when you flip it up.
  3. Write it right on the layout. Wherever you can fit it. It doesn’t matter if you like your handwriting. I promise you that your children and grandchildren will treasure it.
  4. Print it out on the computer in a journaling box, or space it so you can cut it apart and make strips of journaling on your layout.
  5. Journal on vellum or transparencies to add interest, and adhere it to your layout using brads or staples.
  6. There are lots of journaling stamps… if you are concerned about the neatness of your handwriting, stamp on a piece of paper that you can cut out and adhere to your layout. If you mess up just stamp and try again!
  7. Journal directly on a photo.

Various tips:

  1. I often type my journaling and titles in Word or another program with spell check to make sure that everything is correct before writing it on my actual layout.
  2. There is really no wrong way to journal. Tell the story that’s on your mind or in your heart!

I have a few different examples to share:

Journaling directly on the photo. (Be sure to use pens made for this application!)



Journaling on strips, and adhering them to the layout.



Using journaling stamps. You'll notice on this one that the journaling stamp wasn't big enough for everything I wanted to say, so I stamped it several times and continued the journaling across the page.
