Shapes Plus Banners...Plus new cutting File!

Hi everyone!! This is Pam and I am going to be sharing what I have been working on lately. I have been pairing strips of paper (I am calling them banners) with shapes. You will see this with a couple of different layouts I have completed recently. The first page features hearts plus a banners. I created this cutting file in Photoshop and then cut it with my Silhouette in may different sizes. I cut the middle heart out in a different pattern and adhered them to my page. Here is the result: a fun Valentine's page with lots of hearts! (I will be giving this cutting file away soon on this blog, so make sure you come back to get it)

For my next page, you can see I used the same idea, but with stars. I mean, what goes better with Iron Man than some stars representing his power? My son loved his costume so much, I needed something that expressed his enthusiasm for it. Here is my page and digital cutting files after that!

Now onto the digital cutting files. These files are for personal use ONLY. Contact me if you would like to use them for anything other than a personal file. Here is a preview first.

Cathy's Favorite Projects of 2013

Happy Friday!  It's Cathy here. My turn to share my favorite projects from 2013.  As I went back through the year to find my fav's, I could really see that I did far less creating in 2013. I've got to work on that! I'm a much happier person when I get to create!

Wedding Favor Tic-Tac covers for my niece's wedding. (Apparently I never posted this to my blog!)

They are each linked back to the original blog posts so you scan see the details on how they were made. Except for the wedding favors, which I apparently never shared. Ooops!

Pam shared her favorite pages from 2013 HERE. Over the next week or so many of the other Contributing Artists will also be sharing their favorite pages and projects too.  We hope this gets you inspired to create!

Another Way to "Color" Digital Stamps

Hi everyone! It's Cathy here with a post for you today!  It's been a while!!  Life has taken on some new directions for me and crafting has not had very much time in my life. It feels so good to be getting some creative time again!  And for that I am really thankful!  I got to play with a brand new digital stamp by ArtyPants Digital Stamps called Butterflies and Filigrees, come on that name alone shouts "beautiful"!!  There are so many things that you can do with her digital stamps. She includes a layered file too! So you can clip digital papers or colors to them. You can incorporate them right into your scrapbook or photos designs!

I chose to make a card with this stamp. I brought the .png image into my Silhouette Designer software and resized it for a 4.25"x5.5" card.  I offset it to allow an area for the ribbon. Then I print and cut the card.

So. I'm not so great at using markers to color in digital stamps. But I thought I would share some things I did with this stamp to create a shiny (wish I could photograph the glitter better so you could see just how shiny!) card with texture, color and a bit of grunge.  I got out my copics, glitter and embossing materials.  I used some transparent glitter on the main filigree frame in the design. I wanted to keep it kind of grungy, but add a little dressy to it.

I also traced the 2 butterflies and created cutting shapes for those. I cut them out of vellum.

Each of the butterflies got a sparing layer of glitter on the card face and a rim of opaque glitter on the edge of the cut vellum. I set the vellum on the card with the wings lifted.  The greenery in the stamp was enhanced with color and texture from some gritty moss embossing sand.

Hope this gives you some ideas of how you can use digital stamps in your designs!

Big Photo Template

Hey there! Cathy here, it's been a long time since I had a template to share with you. I created one that I'm sure you'll find plenty of use for.

While working on pages from a recent trip that my family took, I wanted to make a page about the room that we stayed in.  It had an amazing view.  Not that we spent a lot of time in the room, but it certainly was nice to enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean at the beginning and end of our fun filled days. The view from the room was so spectacular in all directions, that I created a panoramic photo from a series of 4 photos. I wanted to include that on the page. That was one of the driving forces behind this template design.

I made the big photo spot at the top. But since I like to include multiple photos on a page, I also included room for 3 more photos below. I also wanted to include some design elements found at the resort. We were staying at Aulani, in Ko 'Olina Hawaii. Plants and flowers surround you. Designs at the resort have both linear and flowing lines. So I used some curves as well as sharp angles in my design and of course included room for flowers and foliage.

I used a combination of digital kits and elements from different designers to create this page. For a list of credits click here.

If you would like a copy of this template that I created in Photoshop, click either of the links below. I have shared the template as both a .psd and .tif file.

Designer Showcase: Dimension/Texture without Bulk

Happy Wednesday!  It's Cathy here with you today to bring you this weeks Designer Showcase. Do you love to add texture to your layouts? But not like all the bulk that goes with it?  We've got a few ideas to share with you that add yummy texture, but keep your layouts on the then side, able to fit nicely in your albums.

Cindy created this really sweet page with some neat tricks to give it dimension. She used tone-on-tone to add dimension to the circles, banner, star and journaling. Gives a really nice deep look without the bulk. Nice, huh?

Check out this two pager. Cindy created a really deep look and gave lots of texture to this page by using a few well coordinated colors. She repeated the pattern at both ends of the page which gives both the look of depth, as well as the feel of texture. There is some hand stitching that really gives nice texture too.  Cindy calls herself a "bulk-phobe" (so cute!), she loves the look of dimension, but not the hassle of bulky layouts. So she finds lots of ways to trim down her layouts. The title on this one is made from chipboard letters. But, Cindy peeled off the bottom layers of them to make them thinner.  So cool!

Doesn't this page by Nancy look so rich and deep? It makes me just want to reach out and touch it! Nancy has some buttons and brads on her page, which area always a great way to add dimension to a page.  The real depth to this page is accomplished through the layering of the papers.  The patterns and colors play together nicely, and the really cool part is the bit of shape that Nancy added to them, She trimmed a pennant edge to the papers. Great way to add detail, dimension and texture to a layout, while still keeping it skinny!

If you've been following our blog, you know that Vicky is well known for you bulky textured dimensional beauties. She even came up with a layout that has lots of detail and texture without a lot of bulk.  Vicky used doilies as the background of your design. They add so much to the page. She also used some thin chipboard and die cuts too. By repeating the pattern of the doilies on teh page, Vicky has created dimension and texture and set up a visual stimulating page!

Lesley has some great techniques for for making your page textures without bulk.  She used a punch to create a border which gives the page intricate detail and texture. She added another border on the left side of the photo mat and ran that through her Cuttlebug to emboss it to give added dimension. Lesley added great dimension and detail to her background paper. It started out white, then she blended Pan Pastels and added some Glimmer Mist. What a great way to add the feel of texture without any bulk.  The title and verson on her page were added using stamps - another great way to add the look of layers and dimension as well as the feel of varying textures with no bulk at all!

Another tip that Lesley shared is that although this page appears to be 5 layers of paper, she actually cut away the hidden parts of paper behind each layer. Making her finish page only 1 paper of thickness!  Clever idea!  Plus you can then use those scraps for other projects!

Sometimes you might have a piece of memorabilia that you want to add that is bulky.  Like I did on this page. I wanted to include the cozy wrap from my coffee.  To keep the page from being too bulky, I carefully pulled apart the cozy and spread it across the page as a large element.  I also included a used gift card. By not layering my elements too much on top of each other, I was able to keep the page from getting too bulky. Ohhh, I used to love coffee. I gave it up cold-turkey 18 months ago.  Glad I made this page before I quit that habit!

Another way to keep your pages skinny is to make hybrid pages. By hybrid, I mean a combination of digital and traditional paper scrapping. That's how I created this page.  The background of this page was created digitally. It includes the large photo at the top merged on to the digital paper on the bottom with the honeycombs, "paint" spray, journaling, smaller photo and date.  I then printed that out as one piece of paper. I layered that on a 12x12 Kraft paper.   The only "bulk" to this page is the pocket that I created for the lower right corner. I again designed that digitally and printed it so it is one piece of paper. I then glued 3 sides of it to the lower layer. I was able to stuff our tickets and wrist bands from this great exhibit into the pocket and still was able to place this layout inside a sleeve in my album. Sorry the photo is so wobbly. I was laid up following surgery when I finished this and actually took the photo while it was laying on my lap!

We would be remiss if we didn't mention digital scrapping as a way to accomplish dimension, and texture without bulk. I created this layout completely digitally.  I created a lot of layers on this page and used elements that have the look of rich grungy, and sharp textures.  The secret to getting this look digitally is playing with shadows.

We hope we've given you a few ideas on how to help your pages lose the bulk, but not the look!

New Sketch and Template with Arrows!

Hi, this is Dolores and I have a sketch and template to share today the uses large arrows to accent your page.  The arrows give the background some interest and allow you to use multiple colors or patterned paper with ease.  I have two layouts to share using the template.  First is a vintage looking layout about the special things I recall of my Grandmother, thus my title "My Wish for Vintage Charm."

The arrow shapes here are reminiscent of quilt pieces and the intricate stitching my Grandmother did to create them.  I used a lovely kit by Sherwood Studio to create this page called Thriftique.  My second layout is a complete turnaround from the feminine to the masculine.  Here is a page with a picture of my husband hiking.

I rotated the template 90 degrees counter clockwise and got a whole different look.  Now use your imagination for a moment, don't those arrow shapes remind you of tire tracks from an off road vehicle.   This page was created using two coordinating kits from Sherwood Studio, they are Colorado Springtime and Colorado Springtime in the Canyon.  Living in Colorado and loving the outdoors I couldn't resist these two.  Here is the sketch of my page.

The template I created in PhotoShop can be downloaded at either of the two file sharing sites below.

Have a great time scrapping those layouts.  Hope you enjoy the template!

A Template and Sketch with more wavy lines!

Hi, this is Dolores and I am going to share a fun template and sketch I created recently that has a whole side of wavy lines to play up those pretty papers you have stashed away.  I love patterned paper and often have fun mixing things up on layouts when I can't choose just one paper for a background.  With this layout I created an interesting look and got to use multiple papers!  Here's my page.

As you can see I have 5 different papers working together on this page.  A background pattern and then 4 other papers creating my waves on the right side.  I created this page using a really beautiful kit by Siamese Studio called Romance a Paris.  It's part of the Grab-A-Byte offering at ScrapbookBytes this month.  Here is what I used, the papers, elements and clusters.  Below is my sketch.

The wavy side is really made up of just one shape that I have layered on top of one another staring at the bottom and spacing it so that I have 10 separate pieces of paper.  Here is the basic wave shape that you can trace if you are a paper scrapbooker.
For our digital scrapbookers I have a template of the page that I created using PhotoShop CS5.  You can download if from either of the file sharing sites below.

Heather's Sketch & Template #13

Hi everyone! It's Heather, and I'm back to share my last sketch and template here on Ideas For Scrapbookers. I was one of the original contributing artists when Pam first started this blog so I'm really sad to leave. I've had a wonderful time working with Pam and the other contributors have been amazing as well. I'll miss posting and hanging out with everyone. This will be the last sketch I post here. It's sketch #13.

I based the sketch on this paper page that I made with the March Scraptastic Club kit and add on called "Celebrate Life". I used the octagon shape as a background because I wanted to try something new. The pinwheels are also a new thing for me. I've never made them before, but they were super simple to make.

I sent this sketch to quite a few of my talented friends. They definitely didn't disappoint me! Nancy emailed me this fabulous layout about a fundraising concert that she attended with her husband. I love that she made this layout with some of her older paper. The bracket shape she used in place of the octagon looks great!

Lesley contributed this adorable layout about her grandson's first train ride. The train embellishments are awesome. The photos really make this page stand out because you can see the wonder and amazement in his eyes. She capped her page off with some really cool rosette embellishments.

This sunshine filled layout is by Dolores. She used some really special pictures from a recent family gathering. I really love the color combination on this page. The sun peeking from behind the octagon is a perfect way to draw attention to that corner. A very inspiring, happy layout!

This beautifully distressed page is by Vicky! I love all of the paper tearing and the butterflies look like they are about to fly right off of the page. I think the chicken wire looks fantastic too because it makes the page more masculine.

This last layout is mine. It's a digital page that I made with Jenni Bowlin Studio's Homespun Collection. I used the template, but I deleted the octagon layer. It gives the design a more graphic feel.

Thank you very much for contributing to this post ladies! It has been a pleasure to work with each of you and I won't forget the friendships that I've made here.
